A French mistake (almost) everyone makes

Here’s a mistake almost every one of my students keeps making, either at the beginner, intermediate or advanced level.

Yet, it’s one that’s super easy to correct.

Can you spot the mistake? There’s only one!

Before I reveal the answer, let’s review a few grammar points.

To say:

• I listen to podcasts while doing the dishes

You have to use the French gerund, or gérondif.

• J’écoute des balados en faisant la vaisselle

The gerund is constructed with en and the present participle, which ends in -ant.

• Elle s’est blessée en réparant la table

  She injured herself while repairing the table

• Il parle en dormant

  He talks in his sleep (while he’s sleeping)

• En voulant l’aider, je suis tombé

  While trying to help him/her, I fell

• Il est tombé en jouant au baseball

  He fell while playing baseball

• L’isolement social peut être à l'origine de la dépression, surtout en vieillissant

  Social isolation can lead to depression, especially as we age (while growing old)

Tout en faisant

The gerund may be accompanied by the word tout, to emphasize a continuous action. In English, you could say: at the same time.

• Nous allons travailler tout en nous amusant

  We're going to work and have fun at the same time

So what’s the mistake in the sentence in introduction?

• J’ai passé la soirée en regardant la télé

• J’ai passé la soirée à regarder la télé

⛔️ The mistake is that we don’t use the gerund here.

It’s not a simultaneous action!

Notice how all the examples before would translate roughly as: while doing something?

Here, it translates as doing something. It’s just something you did during a period of time.

When we spend time (or even waste time) doing something, in French, it’s:

• Passer une période de temps à faire quelque chose

Here are more examples:

1. J'ai passé la journée à lire

2. Elle a passé la matinée à faire du jardinage

3. Ils ont passé la nuit à discuter

4. On a passé l'après-midi à cuisiner

5. Tu as passé la semaine à étudier

6. Il a passé le week-end à faire du sport

7. Nous avons passé la soirée à jouer à des jeux de société

It’s possible to combine the two forms.

To spend time doing something while doing something else.

1. J'ai passé la journée à me promener dans le parc tout en prenant des photos

2. Elle a passé la matinée à faire du yoga en méditant

3. Ils ont passé l'après-midi à cuisiner en chantant

4. Nous avons passé la soirée à regarder des films en mangeant du popcorn

5. Tu as passé la nuit à étudier pour ton examen en buvant du café

Now that you’re ready to crush this mistake, let’s try an exercise.

Exercise

Put the following verbs in the gerund or using the form passer du temps à faire quelque chose.

1. Here's how to eat well while being eco-friendly.

   Voici comment bien manger tout _____ (être) éco-responsable.

2. He dropped his iPhone in the river while paddle boarding. 

   Il a fait tomber son iPhone dans la rivière _____ (faire) du paddle.

3. I try to be present as much as possible, while listening to my body.

   J'essaie d'être présente le plus possible, tout _____ (écouter)  mon corps.

4. I entered the game knowing I wasn't going to win.

   J'ai participé au jeu tout _____ (savoir) que je n'allais pas gagner.

5. I spent all day trying to fix my computer

   J'ai passé la journée _____ (essayer) de réparer mon ordinateur

6. It's a place where people can meet with the opportunity to shop locally.

   C'est un endroit où les gens peuvent se rencontrer _____ (avoir) la possibilité de faire des achats locaux.

7. Karaoke: How about expressing your talents while eating tacos?

   Karaoké: Que diriez-vous d'exprimer vos talents tout _____ (manger) des tacos?

8. Even if you drink a lot, it's possible to suffer from heat stroke.

   Même _____ (boire) beaucoup, il est possible de souffrir d’un coup de chaleur,

9. She winked at him and smiled.

   Elle lui a jeté un clin d'œil _____ (sourire).

10. I wasted too much time watching Netflix. Now I attend French With Frederic classes more often.

    J'ai perdu trop de temps _____ (regarder) Netflix. Maintenant, je participe plus souvent aux cours de French With Frederic.

Answers

1. Voici comment bien manger tout en étant éco-responsable.

2. Il a fait tomber son iPhone dans la rivière en faisant du paddle.

3. J'essaie d'être présente le plus possible, tout en écoutant mon corps.
