How to master these French words

Here’s a trick question for you!

What is the name in French of the famous perfume Chanel No. 5. Meaning, how what French word do you use for number 5?

Sometimes in French, we have several words, whereas in English there’s only one or two.

One common source of confusion is the difference between nombre, chiffre and numéro.

Consider the following three examples:

1. “Think about a number from one to ten!”

2. I forgot my phone number.

3. Can you write the number 90 in Roman numerals? 

What these examples have in common is that they all include the word number.

In French, three different words would be used in these three examples.

1. Pense à un chiffre de un à dix!

2. J’ai oublié mon numéro de téléphone

3. Est-ce que tu peux écrire le nombre 90 en chiffres romains?

Let’s clarify it

• Un chiffre is a symbol from zero to nine (0,1,2,3,4,5, etc) . Also, roman numerals. It’s also used in some expressions.

• Un nombre is composed of chiffres. So 24 is a nombre. We also use the word nombre in many expressions to talk about quantities.

• Un numéro is a number that identifies something, for example, un numéro de telephone or a numéro de vol (flight number).

So, we have digits (chiffres), numbers or quantities (nombres), and more specific uses of those numbers (numéros).

Here are some examples

• Mon chiffre chanceux est le 7

  My lucky number is 7

  👉 Here, we reference the single digit 7. Generally, a lucky number is from one to nine. I doubt that many people have 567 as their lucky number…

  ---

• Quel est ton numéro d’appartement?

• What’s your apartment number?

  👉 Here, the number is used to identify something.

  ---

• Le spectacle a attiré un grand nombre de personnes

  The show attracted many people (a large number of people)

  👉 Here, nombre referrers to a quantity.

  ---

• Quel est le chiffre d’affaires de cette compagnie?

  What’s the annual turnover of this company?

  👉 Here the expression chiffre d’affaires is a fixed expression.

We also use the word chiffre to talk about a number that’s the result of a calculation. For example, during the pandemic, we often heard:

• Les chiffres sont en hausse

  The numbers are rising

• Les chiffres sont en baisse

  The numbers are down

Of course, this perfume is called Chanel numéro cinq!
