About our program
For French Learners Who Feel Stuck
Discover How 10 Quebec Books, 10 Films and Hundreds of Cultural References Can Transform Your French in One Year
If You Want to Actually Understand Quebec — Not Just Study French — This Is the Only Program That Takes You There.
Does this sound like you?
You already know some French…
You can follow a podcast, read an article, maybe even watch a French film with subtitles.
But when you hear people from Quebec talk to each other — in a movie, on a podcast, on the street, the accent throws you off.
There are so many expressions you don’t know!
And the cultural references? You have no idea what they’re talking about!
You’re not a complete beginner. But Quebec French makes you feel like one.
And it’s not just the language. It’s everything behind it.
You’ve probably already noticed: understanding Quebec French isn’t just about vocabulary or pronunciation. It’s about knowing who Michel Tremblay and Ariane Moffatt are. It’s about understanding why people get emotional over language laws. It’s about catching a joke in a movie that everyone else in the room is laughing at.
Without that cultural layer, you’re always on the outside — even if your grammar is perfect.
And here’s what most French programs get wrong: they teach you the language as if it exists in a vacuum
Rigid grammar rules
Bland vocabulary lists
Boring conversation drills (hello Duolingo!)
But no context.
No culture.
No life!
What you need instead is to experience the language the way Québécois people actually live it.
Through their stories, their films, their music, their humour, their history.
That’s exactly why I created French With Frederic.
Imagine this for a moment…
Your French is no longer stuck at the same level it’s been for years. You’re finally making real progress!
You watch a Quebec film and you follow the dialogue, the humour, the cultural codes. Without subtitles!
Someone mentions a song, a show, a public figure, and you know exactly who they’re talking about.
You’re no longer studying French from the outside. You’re inside the culture, living the language the way it was meant to be lived.
That’s what happens inside French With Frederic.

French With Frederic is different
It gives you the missing piece: a structured, year-long cultural immersion with live classes, guided reading, film study, and a community of passionate learners.
In this program, you’ll discover…
How to finally understand fast, spoken Quebec French, even when native speakers aren’t slowing down for you.
Why some intermediate learners progress faster in 6 months inside this program than in 3 years of traditional study. It has nothing to do with talent.
How Québécois humour works and why understanding it is the fastest shortcut to understanding the culture.
The overlooked connection between Quebec history and the way people speak today. Once you see it, you’ll never hear French the same way.
How a Quebec film can teach you more useful French in 90 minutes than a month of vocabulary flashcards.
Why our culture-focused group learning accelerates your progress in ways that private tutoring simply cannot, at a fraction of the cost.
Is this program for you?
French With Frederic welcomes learners at every level — from high beginners to advanced. The only requirement is that you already have some basics in French.
That means you can…
Understand simple sentences and follow the general idea of a conversation.
Read a short text in French, even if you need to look up some words.
Say at least a few things in French — even if it’s far from perfect.
If that sounds like you, you’re ready. You don’t need to be fluent. You don’t need to be “intermediate.” You don’t need to have any prior knowledge of Quebec French.
You just need to be curious about Quebec and ready to go deeper than what traditional French courses offer.
What about more advanced learners?
If you’re already comfortable in French, this program will challenge you in ways that traditional courses can’t.
The books, films, and cultural content are authentic — not simplified for learners.
You’ll discover layers of the language and the culture that even advanced learners rarely access on their own.
This program is not for you if…
You’re starting from zero with no French at all.
You’re looking for a grammar-focused course with exercises and tests.
You’re not interested in Quebec’s culture (books, movies, history, etc.)
Here’s everything you get when you join French With Frederic

A Year-Long Cultural Journey Through Quebec in 10 Themed Mini-Sessions
Every year, the program takes you through 10 mini-sessions, each lasting 3 to 4 weeks, with breaks in between.
Each mini-session is built around a Quebec book, a film or cultural content, and thematic lessons that connect language to real life. You’re exploring Quebec one book, one film, one theme at a time.
📚 Club de lecture — The Heart of the Program
Each mini-session, we study a Quebec book together.

From acclaimed films to viral YouTube videos to modern Québécois rap, these classes bring you inside the culture that shapes the language.

FAQs about our program
When does the program start?
French With Frederic runs year-round, with 10 themed mini-sessions spread across the calendar year. You can join anytime!
When you join, you step into the current mini-session and follow along from there.
Every mini-session is self-contained, so there’s no “catching up” to do.
What time are the live classes?
Most main live classes are held in the evening (Eastern Time), with daytime sessions for Q&A and conversation practice. The full schedule is sent every Monday morning, so you always know what’s coming up.
But remember: every class is recorded. If a time doesn’t work for you, you can watch or listen at your own pace. Many members follow the program entirely through the recordings and podcasts.
What if I miss a class?
Every class comes with a full video replay, an audio podcast version, notes, and key vocabulary.
The recordings stand completely on their own, they’re not just a “backup”. Some members attend live every week. Others listen to the podcast while commuting. Both approaches work.
How much time do I need per week?
That’s entirely up to you.
Most members spend 2 to 4 hours per week attending or watching one or two classes, plus some reading and listening.
But there’s no homework, no tests, no deadlines. You take what you need, when you need it.
Do I need to read the books?
The Club de lecture et cinéma is the heart of the program, and you’ll get much more out of it if you read along.
But you don’t have to finish every book. Some members read the whole book, others read selected chapters, and others follow along through the class discussions.
I’m not sure my level is good enough.
If you can follow a simple conversation in French and understand the general idea of a short text, you’re ready!
The program is taught in French, but I use English support for key words and expressions when helpful.
Many members joined feeling unsure about their level and made dramatic progress within weeks.
Proof That This Works
You might be wondering: “Will this really work for me?”
I don’t expect you to take my word for it. Here’s what members have said.
“Lack of consistency was a critical problem in my French learning. Once I joined French With Frederic, the freedom to attend sessions on my own terms completely changed my progress. The learning philosophy, based on culture rather than grammar, has allowed me to feel much more comfortable with a language that is, in itself, quite complex to learn. When people ask me how I learn French, I no longer say I take language classes — I say I take classes on Quebec culture, in Quebec French. You can watch classes from previous years, follow the discussion of a book you didn’t have time to read a few months ago, and attend live sessions. If you dedicate good time to French With Frederic, you’ll find that it’s actually very affordable for everything you can learn. French With Frederic lets you go at your own pace and get involved however you choose — no pressure, no exams, no obligations. All it takes is your own commitment to see progress.”
— Juan David, Colombia
“Before discovering French with Frederic, I was struggling a lot to reconcile the discrepancies I observed between the “standard” French lessons I was receiving and the reality of the French spoken around me here in Quebec City. The key things lacking in my education were primarily focused around region-specific vocabulary, idioms, common sayings, as well as the way average people speak - mostly concerning spoken contractions. Frederic’s program has approached these struggles very comprehensively. Frederic really takes the time to think about how Québécois culture is approached from an outside perspective, and structures his course around areas that are difficult for non-native speakers. I have not been able to find a language-learning program that surpasses or even matches this one in terms of completeness and scope. Even though I have only participated in a couple of book clubs, I have improved my vocabulary by leaps and bounds from each one!”

For a few years, I gave over 3000 private lessons on Italki to hundreds students, with a five-star rating. Here’s what some of my clients have said about my courses
So What’s the Investment?
French With Frederic gives you more cultural immersion, live classes, and authentic content than other programs costing several times more.
To put that in perspective: a single private lesson with a tutor costs $40–60. For less than the price of one lesson per week, you get an entire year of structured cultural immersion — with live classes, recordings, and a library of content that grows every month.
